Melatonin improves sleep apnea outcomes
Effect of melatonin on insomnia and daytime sleepiness, in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia (COMISA): A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial.
We investigated how melatonin affects patients with obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia. In a double-blind trial, thirty patients received either 10 mg of melatonin or a placebo for a month.
The results were striking; those taking melatonin reported better sleep quality, less daytime sleepiness, and greater adherence to their PAP devices. Improvements were noted across several assessments: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Severity Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire showed significant gains for the melatonin group.
Thus, melatonin appears to be a promising option to enhance sleep quality and treatment compliance in this challenging patient group.

Melatonin's role in sleep apnea
Melatonin mediates intestinal barrier dysfunction and systemic inflammation in moderate-severe OSA patients.
We explored how melatonin, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, interacts with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and related health issues.
In a study of 235 men experiencing sleep problems, we found that higher OSA severity correlated with lower melatonin levels and increased markers of intestinal barrier dysfunction and inflammation.
Melatonin appeared to mediate these relationships, explaining a significant portion of the connection between apnea severity and these harmful conditions. However, the overall results suggest that while melatonin is connected to inflammation and intestinal issues in OSA, it does not appear to solve these complications.

I was taking 10 mg Amitriptyline but realised I needed to change my sleep-inducing medication due to its side effects. After being recommended Melatonin, I decided to try it after stopping Amitriptyline for 7 days. I am extremely satisfied with the results and would suggest using it on an experimental basis, as individual responses vary. If anyone requires more details, feel free to ask.

Keep this at your bedside and take 1-2 tablets about 30 minutes before sleep. It looks like candy, making it tempting to take. It worked wonderfully for me; I don’t wake up throughout the night and can sleep soundly until morning, feeling refreshed upon waking. It’s highly recommended for those suffering from insomnia.

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Overview
REM sleep behavior disorder as a complex condition with heterogeneous underlying disorders: clinical management and prognostic implications [Commentary].
We explored REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) as a complex condition that can be linked to a variety of underlying disorders. Through a literature review and insights from foundational texts, we recognized that RBD may emerge at any age and can initially appear as an isolated issue or be associated with other significant conditions like Parkinson’s and narcolepsy.
Our findings highlighted that effective management often includes melatonin or clonazepam as treatment options. Furthermore, ongoing research into the connections between RBD and other sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, remains vital for enhancing diagnostics and treatment strategies.

Great for jet lag

Excellent product! I’m about to repurchase. It’s the best melatonin I’ve used. The extra strength and dissolvable tablets allow me to take one half an hour before sleep. The resulting drowsiness is delightful. This product offers a great night’s sleep, excellent for jet lag or the disruption caused by daylight savings. Good price and service from iHerb.
Sleep apnea is a common and potentially serious sleep disorder characterized by irregular breathing patterns during sleep. Individuals with sleep apnea experience episodes of disrupted or paused breathing, which can occur multiple times throughout the night. These interruptions can last a few seconds to several minutes and often lead to fragmented sleep, which may result in excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. The condition can be broadly classified into two main types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), caused by a blockage of the upper airway, and central sleep apnea (CSA), which occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
The diagnosis of sleep apnea typically involves a sleep study, either conducted in a sleep clinic or at home using portable monitoring devices. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition but may include lifestyle changes, the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, oral appliances, or even surgery in some cases. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to various health complications, including cardiovascular issues, metabolic disorders, and impaired cognitive function, making it essential to consult a healthcare professional if you suspect you or someone you know may be affected by this disorder.
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in the brain, primarily responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycles. It is often referred to as the "sleep hormone" because its levels typically rise in the evening, signaling to your body that it’s time to prepare for sleep. Conversely, melatonin levels tend to drop in the morning, helping to wake you up and feel alert. Factors such as light exposure, age, and lifestyle can affect melatonin production, which is why many people turn to melatonin supplements as a natural remedy for insomnia and sleep disorders.
Melatonin supplements can be particularly useful for those who have disrupted sleep patterns, such as shift workers or travelers experiencing jet lag. Available in various forms, including tablets and gummies, melatonin is widely regarded as a safe option for short-term use. However, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplement, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications. While melatonin can be effective in promoting sleep, its efficacy can vary between individuals, and establishing good sleep hygiene practices, like maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and creating a comfortable sleep environment, can also significantly contribute to better sleep quality.
Based on user reviews, the time it takes to see results from melatonin can vary, but many users report noticeable effects relatively quickly. Several reviewers mention feeling the effects within 20 to 30 minutes of taking the supplement, which suggests it can provide quick relief for those suffering from sleep difficulties, including Sleep Apnea. For instance, one user stated, "From the first night I tried this, it worked wonders... I was asleep within 20 minutes" Read Review. Another noted that they were able to fall asleep within a half-hour after taking it Read Review.
However, some users indicate that it may take longer to experience the full benefits, particularly when incorporating melatonin into a more comprehensive sleep routine. One reviewer mentioned that significant improvements in their sleep occurred after about three months of consistent use Read Review. Overall, while many users find melatonin effective soon after taking it, individual results can vary, and some may require consistent use over a more extended period to achieve optimal sleep quality.
Melatonin supplementation shows promise for individuals dealing with sleep apnea. Recent research indicates a correlation between melatonin levels and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In a study involving 235 men, it was found that lower melatonin levels were associated with greater OSA severity and increased inflammation markers [1]. While melatonin might mediate some negative health effects related to OSA, the overall findings suggest that it does not address the complications solely.
On a more optimistic note, another study conducted a double-blind trial with thirty patients reporting that those who took 10 mg of melatonin experienced significant improvements in sleep quality, reduced daytime sleepiness, and better adherence to their CPAP devices [2]. The results from various sleep quality assessments showed that melatonin could enhance treatment compliance in this group, making it a potentially valuable option. This aligns with findings from studies looking at other melatonin-based treatments, such as agomelatine, which also indicate improvements in sleep parameters for individuals with OSA [3]. Overall, while certain connections suggest benefits, further research is warranted to solidify melatonin’s role in addressing sleep apnea directly.
Based on user reviews, many individuals have reported significant improvements in their overall sleep quality after using melatonin. For instance, one user mentioned that Melatonin helped them transition from their previous medication, Amitriptyline, and expressed extreme satisfaction with the results, indicating it worked effectively for them Read Review. Others have found that they can fall asleep quickly and stay asleep through the night, waking up refreshed in the morning; one person noted sleeping for a solid 9 hours without waking up once Read Review.
Additionally, users have described transformative experiences in their sleep patterns, with several reporting they now fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep. For instance, a reviewer noted that they had managed to eliminate their reliance on sleeping pills and now fall asleep smoothly after incorporating melatonin into their routine Read Review. Another report highlights a person who had struggled with insomnia for nearly 30 years, now enjoying a minimum of 8 hours of sleep Read Review. While these experiences are promising, it's important to remember that individual results can vary.
When it comes to treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with melatonin, research indicates that a dose of around 10 mg may be optimal. A double-blind trial involving thirty patients found significant improvements in sleep quality and reduced daytime sleepiness for those who took 10 mg of melatonin compared to a placebo. Participants reported better adherence to their positive airway pressure (PAP) devices, reflecting an overall boost in treatment compliance (see research id='38816846').
It's worth noting that while melatonin is linked to various benefits for sleep apnea patients, including improved sleep quality, it does not seem to address the underlying complications like inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction associated with the condition, as outlined in other research findings (see research id='38973375'). Therefore, while 10 mg of melatonin appears to have positive effects, it should be considered as part of a broader treatment strategy that may include other therapies.
